Arugambay

Much loved by all surfers and beach lovers, Arugambay is known for the best surfing area in the country. It is located towards the Southeast coast and the country’s first International Surfing Competition was held by the ISA in 2004.

Attractions in Arugambay are not limited to the seas as there are many wildlife parks in the vicinity that makes this a place for everyone to visit.

Make sure to pack clothing appropriate for the warm climate.

Arugambay boasts of a tropical climate all year round but the peak season for surfing is during the months of July and August.

 

 

Alankuda

Alankuda is located on the Northeastern coast of Sri Lanka and is famous for offshore whale and dolphin watching. Its long stretch of golden sand and blue seas make it an ideal place to relax whilst many water sports such as snorkeling, kayaking, and kite-surfing are also available for those looking for an adventurous vacation.

This area is known for its tropical climate so pack appropriately.

November-December is the time to catch the action of the Dolphins and Whales.

 

 

Bentota

If you want to spend a relaxing time on the beach then Bentota is the place to be. Located on the Southern coast of the island, this beach is ideal to read a book while getting a tan, for a romantic walk under the stars or to simply just spend a leisurely time away from all the hustle and bustle.

The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is a few miles away from the Bentota town and if you’re lucky you may be able to witness the turtles laying eggs.

Pack up your best beachwear and sunscreen for the tropical weather.

Bentota has a good warm climate condition all year but the favorable season is during October-April.

 

Hikkaduwa

Nightlife on the beach is one reason that attracts many locals and tourists to Hikkaduwa. It is one of the most exciting beaches in the country and many music festivals and beach parties take place every few months.

Apart from the entertainment, Hikkaduwa is another popular destination for surfing and a few shipwrecks and multi-colored corals make it perfect for snorkeling too.

If traveling during the monsoon season between May and October, it is best to bring an umbrella along.

November to April is the best time to visit here.

 

Unawatuna

Another popular tourist destination on the southern coast is Unawatuna which is calm during the day and comes alive at night. Apart from the beach parties, tourists can catch the action of sea turtles who sometimes come towards the beach at daytime to greet the visitors.

There are several diving sites as well for diving enthusiasts who love to catch the action downstairs.

Light clothing is suited when visiting coastal areas.

November-April is the ideal time to visit Unawatuna when the seas are calm and the weather is just fine.

 

Mirissa

Mirissa is another favorite location for whale watching. The dolphins can be seen swimming alongside blue whales and sperm whales making it a wonderful sight to witness.

Don’t forget to indulge in a scrumptious seafood meal at any of the beachside restaurants.

Light wear is best for the tropical weather.

March and April are good months to go whale watching here.

 

Mount Lavinia

Mount Lavinia is a beautiful beach not too far from Colombo; the capital of Sri Lanka. Most families come here during the weekend and enjoy the blue seas with kids playing on the golden mile of sand. Witnessing the sunset on this beach is a pleasing sight to the eyes.

Along the beach is the famed Mount Lavinia hotel which holds the riddles to the legendary tales of Sir Thomas Maitland and a local dancer Lovina.

Wear lightweight clothing when visiting beach destinations.

Polhena Beach, Matara

Polhena beach lies in Matara, one of the southernmost areas in the country. It is also one of the safest beaches to go for a swim.

The 18th century old Star Fort resides in the Matara town and is known to be the last main defense post held by the Dutch. The Dondra lighthouse is one the oldest lighthouses in Sri Lanka and is only a short drive from Matara. These attractions are well worth the visit when in Matara.

With a mix of sun and rain, it is wise to pack for both climates.

January-March is the best season to visit to avoid heavy rains.

 

Beruwala

For all of you seeking a beach retreat, Beruwala is the place to be. Its secluded calm seas and golden sands make it ideal to get away from the busy city life. This is also a great budget destination with cheap but fine restaurants and hotels.

Light clothing is suitable but be prepared for sudden showers as well.

December to March is the dry season and is the best time to visit Beruwala.

 

 

Galle

The beautiful sunset adorning the shades of blue seas is best viewed from the Rampart of the historical Galle Fort.

The Fort has access to a secluded and safe bathing area where the water levels are not high and waves are controlled due to the formation of the coral reef.

Light clothing is suited for coastal areas.

December to April is the time with clear skies that makes it good to visit Galle.

 

Weligama

Weligama is a bay area located south of the island which has tranquil beaches with the beauty of Mother Nature, best for those seeking a peaceful vacation.

Kuchaveli

Located on the eastern coast near Trincomalee, this serene beach is surrounded by tropical jungles making it perfect for those wanting to take a break from the busy lifestyle. It is also a popular honeymoon destination.

Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya is a peninsula popular as one of the top places to go whale and dolphin watching in Sri Lanka. Apart from being a marine sanctuary, Kalpitiya is also known for kite-surfing. A walk along the coastline facing both the lagoon and the ocean makes it a picture perfect location to witness a colorful sunset.

Tangalle

Tangalle is a quiet beachside town with a fishing harbor that has become the main source of income. Its widespread soft sand beaches and turquoise seas make it a picturesque sight attracting both locals and tourists who often stay at the many boutique hotels along the coast.

Trincomalee

The pristine white beaches of Trincomalee lie amidst the fifth natural harbor in the world, making this a top travel destination. These beaches are also much enjoyed even by amateur swimmers as the sea level is very shallow due to the barrier reef. The Neelaveli and Marble beaches are two of the most popular and scenic beaches in the area.

Recreational activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and whale watching are also available.

February – October is the best season with tropical temperatures and calm seas.

 

Batticaloa

One of the lesser-known beaches in the island is the beach in Batticaloa. Surrounded by palm trees and enclosed by the lagoon, this is a serene area. On the nights when the moon is full, one can hear the sounds of the ‘singing fish’ from the lagoon which is what makes this place worth visiting.

June is considered the warmest month but Batticaloa can be visited during any time of the year.

 

Pasikudah

Negombo

The Negombo beach is famous for its mouthwatering seafood dishes and convenient location as it is the nearest beach to the Colombo International Airport. Warm sunshine, golden sand, and shades of the blue ocean makes it attractive to anyone who visits here.

Since Negombo is situated in the dry zone, the weather is fine all year round but December – April is considered the peak season for tourism.
